» Question: NTSC vs PAL vs Component

Posted on 25th August 2008

As you may know, I’ve brought my PAL Wii across to the land of the rising sun, meaning I need to invest in a tv to play it. The question is, what do I need to be aware of?

The aim is to get my PAL Wii to work on a Japanese tv, which would I assume run on NTSC-J.

I’m pretty ignorant when it comes to TV/Video encodings so any advice would be grateful.

1. do component cables suffer from NTSC and PAL differences as well? i.e. if i switch from composite to component will it fix this problem?

2. do i just need to check that the tv supports multi-region encoding?

3. is there some other solution?

4. what about HDTV? progressive scan and all that?

Hmmm….

» Hate Is A Strong Word

Posted on 25th March 2008

I just remembered how much I really really really don’t like this time of year. It’s not the festivities, or the weather, or anything like that at all; it’s the upcoming exams. Actually, it’s not even that. Exams, revising and studying are all part of the package of being a student and it’s something I will no doubt look back on with nostalgia in years to come. However, the thing that really grates is reading, hearing and talking about it. I suppose I’m being utterly hypercritical by writing this entry but I feel I need to vent this pent up frustration somehow.

» A Wii Temptation

Posted on 21st March 2008

The great Wii fast came to an end today. I had exiled all Wii gaming, excluding Wii Fit, from my life since the turn of the year but it all collapsed in a few hours of weakness. I had ordered a new game, Battlion Wars 2, a few weeks back and it had been sitting at home for a while. My plan was to wait until post-exams until I played it but teh temptation just sort of took over.

» Wii TV

Posted on 5th March 2008

So, for all those people that can read Japanese and own a Japanese Wii and live in Japan…

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/features/tv_no_tomo/

The rest of us just have to wait…

ok ok, I’ll explain!! The Japanese Wii has a new channel where users can view a tv guide, set reminders (via email/sms) and also view stats on the programmes showing.

Also, whilst the channel is live the wii-mote can be used as a substitute tv remote to flick through the tv channels, adjust the volume, etc!! Apparently it does this via the sensor bar. But yeah, how cool is that!!

Umm, anyways… a more substantial non-wii related update soon  ^^
